Destination: Denver | Kamryn's Urban Senior Pictures

This fabulous high school senior traveled all the way from Dodge City, Kansas to have her senior pictures photographed with me in my beloved Denver, Colorado.

And I just loved getting to host a “destination” senior session right here at home! I think Denver is a pretty great city: it has grown a ton in a short amount of time to become quite a hub of culture, fashion, music and theater.

Seeing my city through the eyes of someone who doesn't live here is always so refreshing, and we had a blast wandering downtown for her urban high school senior session.

We started in the neighborhood around the Tattered Cover LoDo. I love this part of town for its gritty alleyways and proximity also to some more "natural" photos later in the session as we approach the bridges over the creek.

Kamryn's fashion choices were so much fun to photograph. Starting with her cute black dress, amazing tall suede boots, fuzzy wrap and wide-brimmed hat, right from the start I loved working with her and capturing her sense of style.

Next up she had fabulous leather jackets in different moods from hip chic to more casual with jeans.

I loved the variety of well thought out and super fun wardrobe choices she brought in her rolling suitcase to the session. From adorable to street savvy in black leather, to happy 1970's vintage chic, accessorized perfectly with Queen t-shirt, bell-bottom jeans, fuzzy sweater, hat and sunglasses. Awesome.

And the autumn afternoon we got walking around the city was perfect. It's funny how often I think that, but seriously, I live by the "work hard and you'll get lucky" motto... to me the luck often manifests itself in the form of weather, which seems to be with me on this more often than it's not. It's almost uncanny how often I feel that we find the perfect light to match each outfit for every spot we discover together on senior portrait sessions.

The variety and texture in her wardrobe was so much fun to photograph. And to top it all off, the sun we got on my favorite old bridge with this amazing vintage outfit was enough to make me jump up and down while watching the whole look come together through my lens. Backlight magic for the win!

Loved working with Kamryn -- I'm so happy she trusted me with her destination senior portrait session!

Meet Trinity | Urban Vibe Senior Pictures in Denver

I’m not sure I could ever put into words how much I adore photographing this young woman. Hopefully these urban, high school senior pictures, which we photographed right in downtown Denver will do the talking for me!

She was one of my very first headshot clients some eight years ago, back when I was really comfortable photographing architecture and loved good light, but had little experience with portrait work. I remember being creatively inspired by her unique, ethnically ambiguous look, her adorable dimples and her grounded confidence.

In the years since, we’ve watched her beautifully evolve into herself, becoming an extraordinary, intelligent and talented human. This young woman is going places, and I can’t wait to watch the next chapters of her story unfold.

As will come as no surprise, the chance to photograph her senior portraits was an absolute honor... and even more joyful than I could have imagined. Having been inspired by luminous frames I've seen in movies recently, I mentioned that I was curious to try rooftop photography, and thought her look might be perfect for this cinematic-inspired shoot. She loved the idea, and so the details of her session location were born. We started out in the alleys and urban corridors surrounding our final destination for the evening, Denver’s Museum of Contemporary Art at dusk.

She arrived with a fantastic wardrobe, and the day itself gifted us with a most perfect combination of skies -- cloudy when we wanted clouds, backlit sunshine when that would be most dramatic. And a twilight blue over the city set the perfect backdrop for the exact cinematic portrait session about which I’d been dreaming.

OK how about I just share some of the pictures now??

As is hopefully obvious, I absolutely loved every minute of photographing this beautiful human!!

Trinity, we LOVE you and can't wait to see what you do next!

Fashion Inspired Urban Senior Pictures in Denver

I feel honored to get to work with every single person who stands in front of my camera...

Seriously. I get to see amazing things when I’m working with people -- not just in how they look on the outside, but in who they are -- what shines from within and glows through their expression. They say our eyes are windows to our soul. I’m not sure I realized how deeply I believed that until I became a photographer. More often than anything else, the characteristic people tell me they notice in my work is genuine expression and soul in people’s eyes.

That being said… this girl, Sarah, is… extraordinary. Gaze into her eyes for a moment and you’ll see what I mean! I’ll get to how much I adore her personality in a moment, but because this is a blog about photography, I have to start for a moment with a few technical admirations (is that a word?). I have learned a LOT over the years about posing. Posing for different body types, clothing styles, symmetry or asymmetry in people’s faces, men’s bodies, women’s bodies, children’s personality… I’ve taken classes, practiced, read countless articles, worked with hundreds of people, I’ve tried and failed, I've learned how to connect with and to direct my clients, and I’m absolutely still learning new things on every single shoot.

What’s amazing about working with Sarah is how natural she is in front of the camera. I looked back at photos from our first session together -- before I had much of the education and experience that I have now -- and realized how much she has taught ME, through what she does naturally. So THIS shoot -- a few years later -- was beyond satisfying. And I think the pictures show it well.

You may remember a few weeks ago I posted a blog with a sneak peek behind the scenes of this session. We photographed at two different Denver locations (three if you include the bonus pictures in the alley at the end).

Blanc, a converted barn/warehouse space in Denver, was our first location. Typically a wedding venue, this space was AH-MAZ-ING for portrait work (if you’re a photographer in Denver, you can have access to Blanc as part of your membership to The Studio -- more about this amazing group of women in another upcoming post!) Beautiful light, fantastic textures, the kind of vintage materials that are authentically vintage -- weathered through use and age -- all made for incredible backgrounds for Sarah’s portraits. We had a blast exploring the light, playing with posing, composition and learning more about the possibilities of this unique location.

After finishing up at Blanc we headed to downtown Denver, where we photographed inside the colonnade at the Byron White Courthouse. I’ve wanted to photograph portraits here since touring the Courthouse during a Doors Open Denver event. This row of columns is magnificent on it’s own, and the simple dress that Sarah wore was PERFECT to highlight her beauty in this powerful setting. Seriously, she looked like a Greek goddess in here!

As I mentioned, this was the second time I got to work with this incredible young woman and stellar high school senior… there are so many reasons I love working with her. Her eyes are incredible. I mean, ridiculous, right? And in addition to being absolutely gorgeous; she’s so talented it makes me want to cry (come to think of it, her extraordinary acting performances HAVE made me cry…)  On top of it all, she’s got an incredibly fun, witty and just the right kind of “out there” personality… and somehow she’s also grounded, hilarious, and feels like family. I adore her (and her awesome mom!). If you couldn’t already tell, and I am so flipping excited to see where her life and career take her, because I just know amazing things are in store…

Oh right! And after all this, we still weren't quite ready to stop shooting... so one last set of photos in the alley before we stopped for a celebratory gelato!
