Meet Gabe | Urban Actor Headshots in Denver

This young man . . .

What can I say about this talented, intelligent, kind-hearted, young human? Well, I’ve known him, literally, since the day he was born. Since that day (well, actually since about 9 months before that day) he’s been the love of my life, my inspiration, my best buddy… oh yes, and my son!

And while my iPhone camera always holds some several THOUSAND photos of him (the majority of which are of him making ridiculous faces)... And despite the fact that he’s with me holding reflectors to help light my clients as my assistant on most of my photo sessions… Incredibly, we hardly ever take real headshots or portraits of HIM.

So we decided to change that this past weekend, and actually scheduled a sort of official session! Of course, the day we scheduled, it happened to be 18 degrees out (happens less often than you'd think in Denver). But our mission was not to be deterred, and so set out to capture at least a few headshots -- for as long as my fingers worked and his nose wasn't too red!

As it turns out, 18 degrees is REALLY cold, and so we didn’t last all that long (frozen photographer fingers and bright red cheeks in a portrait aren’t the best combination for portrait work), but we had a great time (he remarked how strange it was to be on the other side of the reflector/camera!), and we got a few great shots just wandering the streets within walking distance of our home (and, thankfully, of a warm and cozy coffee shop in which we stopped to warm up!)

It's honestly a bit surreal to edit photos of a face I know so well… but it sure feels wonderful to finally make the time and space to do it!

And on the off chance that it's not abundantly obvious... I love this kid with all my heart!

Family! | Sisters Headshot Session in Aspen Colorado

Ok, yes, so this one is special…

This is, after all: Family.

My son and I were lucky to have a wonderful visit with my sister's family for a few days in Aspen Colorado this past summer. While we were there, since her daughters are a rather multi-talented bunch and needed refreshed headshots for talent and commercial use, we had an impromptu session before dinner one night. And of course, we made sure to grab a few casual family photos as well!

Actor, model and talent headshots, especially when your subjects are this stinking cute, are about so much more than just pictures -- ideally, I'm striving to capture personality in a still frame. That's no small task, and so my biggest work is to get people to forget they are in front of a camera at all. As a result, the sessions become quite entertaining, even for me behind my camera. I work hard with clients to get them to relax -- sometimes knowing them helps, sometimes it presents a different kind of challenge.

But in this case, this session didn’t ever feel like “work,” in that respect. First of all, this was quite casual -- really it had all the formality of “let’s take some photos before dinner.” We were in the mountains of Aspen, Colorado after all, and my awesome assistant (who happens to be my son) was with me, so, why not? And yes, the agenda was officially to get headshots to update with actor/talent agencies, but we were all on vacation, so it was also about having FUN and hopefully getting a few images for the walls!

And we sure did get some beautiful images of these beautiful young humans...

Since I do know these amazing girls personally, I’m always excited for the opportunity to even attempt to capture each of their OVERFLOWING personalities. Seriously. Always. You should see my cell phone camera roll after a few days with them. And it's extra fun to pull out the "real camera" for a session.

These young ladies are incredible -- each so unique from her sisters, but at the same time so clearly family. They are each blessed with extraordinary talent (already evident even so young!), copious amounts of charm, intelligence… and each of these amazing girls possesses her very own brand of stellar wit and inner joy. They are some pretty cool kids. We feel awfully lucky to call them family!

OK so let’s be honest: my job here was not hard; they are freaking adorable. Those last two frames above... those were her response to my asking her what she wanted to be when she grew up.

Her answer, "FAMOUS!"

And then she heartily cracked herself up.

And here they are with their gorgeous mama... that's a whole lot of beautiful in one photo!

Urban Headshot Session at Denver Center for Performing Arts

Confession: I still get nervous before every single photo session. I take it as a sign that I care deeply about the integrity of what I create, that everything works (technically and logistically) and that my client is happy with the experience and the end product. Sometimes, even with careful planning, adjustments are required (due to weather, location, light, etc.), and that’s part of what I love -- the whole process keeps me on my toes -- keeps me constantly learning.

Urban Headshot Session in Denver with beautiful young woman

For all of those reasons and more, portrait sessions are more fun than ever -- even the seemingly straightforward headshot sessions. Perhaps it’s the time of year. Perhaps it’s that I feel a confidence in my own capabilities as a photographer that is allowing me to try new things with light, posing and location. Whatever it is, every single session these days feels fresh and full of opportunity.

This session was no different. What a gorgeous girl -- I absolutely adore this young woman’s darling personality. And I love how her curls naturally frame her face! On top of her radiance, downtown Denver is just so much fun to work with as a backdrop -- particularly on a day like this one with just the perfect amount of overcast in the sky.

Framing portraits against the different colors in the environment -- how an urban scene can be used creatively to highlight a client’s eyes, skin tone or clothing -- it is deeply satisfying to the designer in me! Each carefully composed click of the shutter can create a unique work of art around an amazing person… so. much. fun.

I’m addicted. And I’m guessing YOU need a new headshot!

Portrait Fun with Relatives! | Family Photographer Denver... in Chicago

My son and I recently hopped on board the California Zephyr (yes, the TRAIN!) from Denver to Chicago for a long overdue, low-scheduled, high quality-time visit with family!

One of the afternoons, after a dramatic, Lake Michigan-style storm rolled through, we gathered for a few rather impromptu portraits in my sister's garden. There's nothing quite like the soft light of overcast skies, combined with a bunch of people you love to create a memorable, beloved set of photos!

Here's to celebrating the ones we love!
