Meet Isa | Colorful Senior Pictures in Denver Arts District

Love. This. Girl.

What a blessing to get to photograph her high school senior session in Denver!

Isa's grounded approach to life is rooted in her fierce attitude towards overcoming challenge -- you may recognize her from our STRONG girls session following her dance injury and physical therapy. As long as I’ve known her, the attitude she chooses with which to approach life has always inspired me. And on top of it all she is absolutely multi-talented, she expresses strong, intelligent, compassionate and articulate thoughts in current issues... AND she makes me laugh.

When we were discussing locations for her senior portrait session and the art museum area came up, she asked if we could photograph inside the Clyfford Still Museum. Turns out that with special permission, we could! She picked a wardrobe that allowed for some movement inside the museum in her dresses to draw upon her dancer roots.

And so for Isa, a two part high school senior session was born in Denver's Arts District.

For the first hour we photographed Isa with the backdrop of paintings inside the museum.

Once we wrapped up inside, we headed out into the vibrant neighborhood which surrounds it, in Denver’s ever growing Arts District. Starting with a few photos with her adorable smiling puppy, Webster...

I LOVED her entire wardrobe!

Between the stylish and fashionable wardrobe choices and her vibrant, effervescent personality, we had a blast for the whole photo session. And we even had time for a few family photos (with the dog!) and a few extras just for fun with my photo assistant (and son!) who happens to also be Isa's buddy!

Congratulations to you, Isa on all of your impressive success so far... can't wait to see where you take life next!!

Class of 2018 in Denver: Senior Portrait Season!

Senior portrait season is in full swing! Since early June I’ve been photographing and editing as fast as my shutter, eyeballs -- and computer processor -- will allow. I'm working with such a fun, fascinating and diverse breadth of high school senior clients every day that it has become quite the challenge finding the time to blog. But I’m still here, and I'm dying to introduce you to the first (better late than never!) senior pictures that I photographed for the amazing Class of 2018...

Adding to my warm feelings on this set of photos, this senior portrait session was a personal one. My son and I have known this gorgeous green eyed girl since they were in 6th grade together at the Denver School of the Arts, and you just can’t help but adore her! Ellie is a bright beaming light: talented, kind, and possessing an adorably infectious laugh and fun sense of humor. She is the embodiement of the expression, "Beautiful inside and out."

Having grown up near Wash Park, this outdoor location, a wild geese-filled, luscious public green space nestled in the heart of Denver was a natural fit to capture Ellie’s senior pictures. And it was a fantastic complement to her relaxed, fun personality and her natural, welcoming look.

I’ve photographed at Wash Park several times over the years, although not for a while, and never in some of these parts of the park. As with so many great locations, on this day, with these clouds and this green eyed young woman, everything looked different.

Everything was… perfect.

Given my approach to portrait work, as I tell my clients often, choosing a portrait location is mostly about where you’ll FEEL comfortable. My goal is always to create magical photos anywhere there’s good light. Compositions can change dramatically with the tiniest shift of perspective, even when you’re surrounded by trees and water, as you can see in the different kinds of photos we got during Ellie’s session. Often it’s the simplest move -- a small tweak of my footing or bend of knee, combined with the tiniest shift of her shoulder, and suddenly: BAM. Breathtaking. We had a lot of that on this session. What a blast!

Delivering Ellie’s photos and experiencing HER joy as she adorably hugged her finished Image Box and prints reminded me to my core why I do this. Photographs freeze an incredible slice in time in a young person's life. And it's a moment that will then get to be cherished as a marriage of art and memory for generations. They represent a piece of a story of a beautiful soul on the brink of her great next adventure!

Ellie, thank you for the honor of taking your senior pictures!! Your grounded spirit and authentic joy are positively contagious, and I smiled A LOT editing your photos.

I'm so excited for your senior year and the next chapters that await you and your awesome DSA Class of 2018!

Meet Gabe | Urban Actor Headshots in Denver

This young man . . .

What can I say about this talented, intelligent, kind-hearted, young human? Well, I’ve known him, literally, since the day he was born. Since that day (well, actually since about 9 months before that day) he’s been the love of my life, my inspiration, my best buddy… oh yes, and my son!

And while my iPhone camera always holds some several THOUSAND photos of him (the majority of which are of him making ridiculous faces)... And despite the fact that he’s with me holding reflectors to help light my clients as my assistant on most of my photo sessions… Incredibly, we hardly ever take real headshots or portraits of HIM.

So we decided to change that this past weekend, and actually scheduled a sort of official session! Of course, the day we scheduled, it happened to be 18 degrees out (happens less often than you'd think in Denver). But our mission was not to be deterred, and so set out to capture at least a few headshots -- for as long as my fingers worked and his nose wasn't too red!

As it turns out, 18 degrees is REALLY cold, and so we didn’t last all that long (frozen photographer fingers and bright red cheeks in a portrait aren’t the best combination for portrait work), but we had a great time (he remarked how strange it was to be on the other side of the reflector/camera!), and we got a few great shots just wandering the streets within walking distance of our home (and, thankfully, of a warm and cozy coffee shop in which we stopped to warm up!)

It's honestly a bit surreal to edit photos of a face I know so well… but it sure feels wonderful to finally make the time and space to do it!

And on the off chance that it's not abundantly obvious... I love this kid with all my heart!

I’m a Denver based talent and actor headshot photographer specializing in bringing out connection, personality in my clients’ photos by giving them a highly personalized photo session experience. I would love to chat with you about your headshot and family portrait needs!

Meet Zoe | Senior Portrait Session at the Denver Public Library

I'll just say it: this session was kind of a dream for me.

senior-session-library-denver-merrittphoto

Those who know me know how much I adore books. OK, honestly, it goes a bit beyond adoration and may be closer to a borderline obsession. I collect, devour, read, sniff, re-read, and even have taken classes to learn how to binding my own books. I constantly dread moving because, though I have very little furniture, my book collection is not small. Or lightweight..

So (I swear I have a point here)…. the opportunity to photograph a young writer who loves books enough that she requested her senior portrait session location inside the library had me kind of beside myself with joy in anticipation of her session.

And so it is that I knew I adored her from the moment I met Zoe... Lovely, intelligent, sweet and GORGEOUS Zoe..

Zoe’s senior session had a unique and quietly confident kind of magic. First of all, she’s stunningly beautiful -- inside and out. There's a deep and fully present quality of her vibrant green eyes that took my breath away over and over throughout the session. Then fold in that giant crooked smile, adorably quirky personality and perfectly fitting wardrobe… we’re talking about a photographer’s dream high school senior portrait session!

Photographing inside the Denver Public Library was creatively satisfying on multiple levels (and yes, old book smell counts as at least one of them). Working with light, using the colors, shapes and textures of books as compositional elements, exploring the different parts of the library -- warm old wood, card catalogs, books of every size and age.

When, at one point, I asked her to grab a book, Zoe’s eye fell on what seemed to be the nearest one, and without skipping a beat, she nonchalantly pulled this book out as if she had conjured that very title with her mind.

You see? Magic.

And for the last bit of magic… I’ve noticed over years of doing these sessions, that there’s something kinda cool that happens when people think the session is wrapped up. We’re packing up and heading back to our home base. Serendipity tends to insert itself into this space. Light falls in a new way; colors of a wardrobe suddenly just HAPPEN to be complemented by urban sculpture… a random sprinkler head post that I’ve walked by a million times suddenly presents itself in a new way to add to a composition and pull color from an outfit (ok, that particular one IS a first)…

I watch this happen over and over just at the point that a level of unguarded relaxation washes over my client (at this point we know we’ve already captured amazing images, so there’s zero pressure in this space), and I can capture a new side of people in this space. Those “afterthought” photos often become my favorite photos of the day.

Case in point with this final series… Sigh…

I’m a lucky, lucky girl.

Thanks also to Ashleigh Franke, Beauty by Ashleigh, for her always beautiful hair and makeup artistry!
