Meet Isa | Colorful Senior Pictures in Denver Arts District

Love. This. Girl.

What a blessing to get to photograph her high school senior session in Denver!

Isa's grounded approach to life is rooted in her fierce attitude towards overcoming challenge -- you may recognize her from our STRONG girls session following her dance injury and physical therapy. As long as I’ve known her, the attitude she chooses with which to approach life has always inspired me. And on top of it all she is absolutely multi-talented, she expresses strong, intelligent, compassionate and articulate thoughts in current issues... AND she makes me laugh.

When we were discussing locations for her senior portrait session and the art museum area came up, she asked if we could photograph inside the Clyfford Still Museum. Turns out that with special permission, we could! She picked a wardrobe that allowed for some movement inside the museum in her dresses to draw upon her dancer roots.

And so for Isa, a two part high school senior session was born in Denver's Arts District.

For the first hour we photographed Isa with the backdrop of paintings inside the museum.

Once we wrapped up inside, we headed out into the vibrant neighborhood which surrounds it, in Denver’s ever growing Arts District. Starting with a few photos with her adorable smiling puppy, Webster...

I LOVED her entire wardrobe!

Between the stylish and fashionable wardrobe choices and her vibrant, effervescent personality, we had a blast for the whole photo session. And we even had time for a few family photos (with the dog!) and a few extras just for fun with my photo assistant (and son!) who happens to also be Isa's buddy!

Congratulations to you, Isa on all of your impressive success so far... can't wait to see where you take life next!!

Meet Annika | Playground Garden Senior Portraits in Denver

Annika... one of my boy's first friends in 6th grade...

01-denver-high-school-senior-pictures.jpg

Allow me to start by saying that I adore this young woman. I have adored her since knowing her as a precocious, hilarious and strong young middle schooler. She has always possessed a keen sense of comedic timing, immeasurable talent, and the kind of grounded, fiercely independent strength that you know will drive her to all kinds of interesting places in life. An actor, friend and beautiful young woman, she’s got it going on.

I had always pictured her wanting an edgy urban session so it was unexpected when we met for her consultation and she revealed that she wanted to do her senior session in the gardens at her old elementary school. She wanted to revisit who she was through the lens of who she is now. Being a senior is full of different kinds of nostalgia for different people, and what a wonderful opportunity senior photos are to explore where you’ve been as a diving board for jumping into the unknown.

And out of this very personal desire, a warm and fun photographic story was born as we discovered different sides of Annika’s personality amidst the sunflowers and summer light.

And then there's silly Annika... still so beautiful.

A few months ago when I was chatting with Annika about plans for what's next, she answered that she was “ready to be scared again.” I love that.

Here’s to that attitude of bravery and bold choices as the perfect approach to graduation. And life, really. Cheers to honoring where you’ve been and boldly writing new chapters into the unknown. What an exciting time to be a high school senior.

Annika… Gabe and I are thrilled to know you (and your family!)

Voice Talent | Personal Branding Portrait Session in Denver

Don’t be fooled by her petite stature: this adorable woman is a fierce powerhouse of talent, warmth and inspiring confidence. To say I was impressed by her (and loved every minute of spending the day with her!) would be an enormous understatement.

Rachael West Talent Personal Branding Photos in Denver with Merritt Portrait Studio

An Emmy Award Winning ISDN Voice Talent, Actor, Model and Host, she also happens to be downright delightful. My son (assisting on this session) and I thoroughly enjoyed touring her studio, learning about the work she does in her impressive custom studio, and basking in the purple and yellow glow of her home.

Her personal branding photo session was divided into two parts. Part One fell into my initial career skillset of architectural photography. The goal here was to showcase her incredible, purple (I do LOVE a client with his or her own color!) custom recording studio. Her top of the line professional recording booth was designed to fit her home so she can record at any hour, without the need to work around others’ studio hours, as well as to meet the demands of her internationally based clientele. And this woman WORKS. Every detail has been addressed from technical to functional… and the cream on top? It is all designed to match her personal style.

Part Two of her session was her personal branding, headshot and portrait session. Which, of course, was a blast! We spent a large portion of the session laughing as we wandered around downtown Denver seeking out the perfect backgrounds and colors to complement her wardrobe and coloring, finding a cohesive look to tie all of her photos together. All the while we enjoyed trading industry stories and getting to know each other..

I always love working with actors and talent who have had the opportunity to work with other photographers, as their perspective provides me with valuable feedback. I try to be as helpful as possible in communicating direction on a session, as well as showing my clients what I mean with examples on the back of camera to help them visualize what I'm getting. It was great to hear her articulate both during the session and afterwards, just how helpful that was on that side of the camera.

"Amazing! Incredible talent, wonderful ability to give direction in the moment with understandable adjustments that make the photo magical. The BEST headshot experience I've ever had in Denver!" - Rachael

Towards the end of the session, as the light slipped toward the warm and golden hour, we headed to one of my favorite spots in Denver and these photos are some of my favorites of this season. Warmth permeating not just in the quality of light, but captured in her adorable personality, expression, tone and character.

Every time I meet someone with this quality of warm competence and confidence, I can see immediately that their clients must love working with them as well. What a treasure!!

Pop Portraiture | Senior Pictures with a Comedic Twist

OK so first off, Greetings! It has been a while! The beginning of a new year is always a quiet time of reflection, and assessing business goals for my portrait studio for the year, and regrouping after the craziness of summer, fall and winter sessions. It was an incredible year for my photography business, and I’m ready to get back and blog some of last year’s amazing SENIOR SESSIONS!!

And seriously, who better to start that off with than THIS AMAZING HUMAN!!

I find it completely impossible not to smile around Cammy (actually his whole family is pretty smile-inducing). Talented, bright, and with a spirit and laugh that is positively infectious. His enthusiasm for life and for supporting those around him inspires me and makes my soul happy (seriously, this next generation is pretty awesome).

When he described his unique vision for his senior photos, I was excited for a session that fell a bit outside my normal high school senior comfort zone. For this one, we were going to create SNL-inspired, vibrant and fun “bumper” style photos, drawing on Cammy’s comedic, fun loving personality and adding colorful, pop / poster style effects in post production. We collected and shared ideas via Pinterest, booked time in my studio co-op, and we were off!

As you can clearly see, this kid has personality for miles, so capturing authentic expression genuinely was a an effortless process, essentially we enjoyed a session of mostly joking around and sharing copious laughter, with some intermittent actual photographing!

Post processing his set was incredibly satisfying. I initially learned to use photoshop back in my architecture days, applying textures to 3D models I’d built in AutoCAD. So a photoshop project in portrait work taps into an old skillset for me, and it was really fun to stretch those muscles! Color and effects were added to provide the POP of our desired visual aesthetic.

Thank you, Cammy, for your talent, your spirit, your kindness… and for inviting me to be part of your senior picture experience and vision! I’ve been looking forward to this collaboration for years!

The Urban Vibe: Senior Pictures with Street Art in Denver

I’ve long suspected that it’s impossible not to adore Sam... spending time with him while we photographed his senior session made me even more sure!

RiNo guy Senior Pictures with graffiti, photographer Jennifer Koskinen of Merritt Portrait Studio

Temperatures soared to near 100 degrees on the day we photographed this colorful high school senior session in one of my favorite, uniquely fun and ever changing parts of Denver...

But I’m pretty sure we laughed throughout the entire photo session, almost completely forgetting how hot it was. Spending time with this positive, talented, comedic and wonderful human is always a joy. Add to that the fact that my eyes were soaking up awesome possibility in every direction, and I was a happy photographer having way too much fun creating photos!

I love when people want to photograph in RiNo, as this part of Denver is relentlessly inspiring...

A burgeoning artist community at the mercy of its creatives (and a recent infusion of interest and money in the neighborhood), I think of this whole urban neighborhood like a living canvas. The combination of ever expanding commissioned street art and incredible alley graffiti makes the entire streetscape full of vibrant energy, color, and gritty artistry. And even in height of summer sun, there’s an almost overwhelming abundance of unique backdrop options for portraits.

So when you start with art, and then bring in an exceptional human -- a high school senior with a great personality and wonderful sense of style -- a guy like Sam -- talented, creative, positive and giving person with an infectious laugh -- you’re bound to end up with a pretty kick-ass set of senior pictures!

Truly, I adore this session most for Sam’s presence and breadth of expression, his genuine enthusiasm that communicates so well through his eyes, and the fact that he seemed to enjoy this location every bit as much as I did!

Sam, it was SUCH a joy to work with you and I can’t wait to see where you go next!
